How do I look up the permit history of a San Jose property?
- Go to the city's public permit portal, SJPermits.org.
- Use Property Search and enter the address.
- Open the property, then choose View Permit/File to see its permits.
- Open a permit's details to see its status, inspections and any scanned documents.
Anyone can search the permit history of any property in the city, free. The city's online building permit records reach back to the 1950s.
Addresses in unincorporated pockets of Santa Clara County are permitted by the county, not the City of San Jose, so they won't appear on SJPermits.

How Morningline works
- Overnight, we read the permits. Every new San Jose building permit, the day the city publishes it.
- We pick the jobs that fit your trade and research who's behind each one: the builder, the owner, the company that just bought the house.
- By morning, it's in your inbox: a short call list with phone numbers, so you call first.
Construction research for San Jose contractors and suppliers

How we count
Building permits issued from September 30, 2026 through October 29, 2026, the most recent 30 days of San Jose data we hold. Source: public building permit records for San Jose. Each permit is counted once. Values are the valuations reported on the permits, leaving out obvious data-entry errors; a project filed as several permits is valued once. Contractor counts are companies named on the permits.
