Seattle Puts $13.65 Million Behind 77 New Homes Families Can Buy

Seattle is putting $13.65 million into five new developments that will add 77 homes for families to buy, the city's Office of Housing announced Wednesday. The homes are for households earning up to 80% of the area median income in Washington's largest city, and they're meant to stay affordable for good.

The money will build condos and townhomes in five neighborhoods: Lake City, the Central Area, Rainier View, Highland Park and Delridge. "Owning a home is one of the best ways for families to build wealth and put down roots in their community," Mayor Katie B. Wilson said in the announcement.

Four of the five projects belong to Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King and Kittitas Counties. Together they account for 73 of the homes, the group's CEO, Brett D'Antonio, said in the city's announcement.

Thirty-two condos on 23rd Avenue

The biggest of the five is a condo building at 115 and 119 23rd Ave. in the Central Area. Habitat and the Central Area Youth Association will build 32 homes there: 7 studios, 6 one-bedrooms and 19 two-bedrooms. The ground floor will be a community center for the youth group, known as CAYA.

CAYA's executive director, Chettie McAfee, said the homes are meant for "the families who helped shape our community."

The Central District has a second new building on the way. Last week Seattle's public social housing developer said it will build 20 units, mostly for families, next to the neighborhood's library branch, KUOW reported. That project will cost $15 million, and the agency hopes to open it by 2028.

Two in West Seattle

Down in Delridge, Habitat's Puget Park Flats at 5005 Delridge Way SW will have 29 condos, 17 with two bedrooms and 12 with three. The city granted $5.29 million for it, an Office of Housing spokesperson told the West Seattle Blog. The lot has sat empty for years. It once held a triplex, the blog reported.

In Highland Park, Habitat will build six four-bedroom townhomes at 8844 10th Ave. SW. That one got $1.26 million, according to the same report.

Townhomes in Lake City and Rainier View

Up north in Lake City, Habitat's fourth project is six more four-bedroom townhomes, at 13515 27th Ave. NE.

The last award goes to Homestead Community Land Trust, which will build four three-bedroom townhomes at 11174 Beacon Ave. S in Rainier View. CEO Kathleen Hosfeld said the city's money lets the trust use land it already holds to "turn one permanently affordable home into four."

The city's announcement didn't give construction dates for any of the five projects.
